Running headtorches: choose beyond the lumen number
A headtorch is not a complete night-running plan, and its biggest lumen number is not enough to choose one. The beam pattern, the output you can sustain, the control buttons and the way it fits matter too. Compare the exact model generation: familiar product names can remain while brightness and charging systems change.
Match the torch to the route and duration, then examine the beam and runtime at the setting you intend to use. Test the loaded headband and controls before relying on it away from a familiar environment.

Compare like-for-like settings
Read the maker’s specification table for the exact model. Record the beam mode, output and runtime together rather than combining the maximum brightness with a lower mode’s runtime. A battery indicator is useful only if you understand what it means. Do not plan a remote route around an untested maximum-duration claim or assume a worn battery behaves like a new one.
Check fit and operation
Try the torch over your usual cap or winter headwear. Adjust as instructed and move your head without allowing the beam to shift unpredictably. Test buttons with your intended gloves and learn the locking function if provided. A torch that turns itself on in your pack can arrive at the start depleted, so store it appropriately.
Identify the product generation
The Petzl ACTIK CORE family includes multiple generations. The current manufacturer page describes its current model; an older retail listing may differ. Confirm the selected product’s model code, charging port, battery and supplied items. Petzl’s HYBRID concept describes compatible rechargeable and standard-battery options on supported models, not a guarantee that any battery fits any Petzl torch.
Rehearse the whole setup
Use a familiar route for the first test and follow local and event safety requirements. Check that your spare-power arrangement actually works with the torch. Keep route planning, visibility to others and emergency preparation separate from shopping for a brighter light; a headtorch does not remove the need for those decisions.

When not to buy
