Get through the mud—and get changed afterwards

For an obstacle race, think about two loads: the kit that moves with you on the course and the clean things waiting at the finish. Both deserve a little planning.

On the course, you want essentials secured without loose items getting in your way. Afterwards, you want to find a towel and dry clothes without covering them in the mud you’ve just brought back. These guides deal with each part in turn.

Choose an obstacle event

Still choosing your event? Our comparison of UK obstacle events explains how Spartan, Tough Mudder, Wolf Run, Nuclear and Total Warrior differ in terrain, obstacle demands and participation style.

Use the course difficulty guide to read the physical demands, check water, heights and obstacle alternatives, or plan for going alone or with friends.

What to wear and carry

Start with the OCR kit guide. Use your event’s information alongside it, then keep the on-course load focused on what you’ll actually need.

A change bag that works with muddy hands

The post-race change-bag guide walks through changing, keeping clean kit separate and making room for the wet return load.

Getting everything home

Deal with the dirtiest items before they share space with the rest of your things. The muddy-shoe guide covers transport and what to do with them once you’re back.

If your phone is coming with you, the phone-pouch guide will help you think about protection, access and carrying position together.
