Muddy running shoes: storage bags and cleaning kit
A shoe bag is useful for keeping mud away from other belongings, but it is not a substitute for cleaning and drying footwear. Choose it around the actual shoes, including any bulky soles, and your journey home. The simplest effective setup may be a washable container you already own.

Check the usable size
Fit both shoes in their normal shape, including the outsole and any removable parts you expect to carry. A shoe-size range does not tell you the dimensions of every trail shoe. Look at the opening as well as the internal volume. A very tight bag can be awkward to close with muddy hands and may leave dirty soles pressed against the closure.
Separate the journey from storage
Temporary containment on the way home has a different purpose from long-term footwear storage. Do not leave wet shoes sealed simply because the bag keeps the rest of your kit tidy. Empty the system when you return and follow the maker’s drying guidance. Keep dry clothes and electronics out of the dirty compartment.
Use the footwear instructions
Read care advice for the exact model and materials. Do not apply a universal machine-washing, soaking or direct-heat routine to all running shoes. Choose cleaning tools that the maker permits, and avoid aggressive scraping of delicate surfaces. If the sole, upper or fastening is damaged, cleaning does not resolve the defect.
Keep the kit modest
A brush or cloth that serves the recommended routine may be enough. Check whether a branded cleaning bundle supplies tools you need or duplicates things you already own. After cleaning, wash or wipe the transport container according to its instructions and dry it before packing it with the next set of clothes.
