There are 3 things every runner needs while training or during a race: speed, hydration, and determination. The Nathan Speed 2 Waistpack can equip you with 2 of those things, but the determination is still in your court.
- Super light pack (around 8 ounces empty)
- Balanced, no bounce fit
- Easily adjustable Velcro belt strap
- Available in multiple colors and sizes
- The bottle holders are made specifically for the molded Nathan bottle, but as long as you don’t lose one you’re fine
The Bottom Line
If you prefer to stay hydrated via water bottles instead of a hydration pack then the Nathan Speed 2 is pretty good choice. It only sports a total of 20 ounces of water, but that should be enough for most of your training needs.

We almost think a more appropriate name for the Nathan Speed 2 Waistpack might be the Nathan Quickdraw because that’s more or less what you’ll feel like while running, which in our opinion is a pretty cool thing.
Comfort and Fit
We always find this to be the most crucial part, especially for running waist packs. They have a tendency to “ride up” or bounce. Nathan did a good job of balancing out this pack and in using a Velcro belt made the adjustment extremely easy. You shouldn’t have any real complaints in this department.
The hydration is pretty straight forward. It’s just (2) 10 ounce molded bottles. The top of the bottles are curved slightly making it easier to reach behind and grab when while running. As we mentioned above the bottle holders are made specifically for these bottles, so while you could try to put your own bottle in here it probably won’t work out too well.
Nathan always seems to pack a ton of storage options into their packs. Here’s your options for the Nathan Speed 2:
- Front water-resistant pill pocket
- Power stretch back pocket (also has another flat pocket inside)
Because the pocket is made out of a stretchy mesh material it can actually fit quite a bit more than you think. You can easily fit a gel (or 2), your keys, cell phone, and some trail mix (small pack). There’s also a small inner pocket that adds a bit of separation, so you can toss your keys back there that way you’re not accidentally grabbing at them on race day.
